I'd say Doom.wad, but it's really a tough decision. Episode 1 of Doom.wad is fabulous but episodes 2 and 3 range from good to meh. I'm also a big fan of the McGee and Romero levels of Doom2.wad. And (*prepares for forumdeath*) I've never actually played all of Plutonia. On my last attempt, I died on map01. If I remember correctly I was playing on an easy skill, too. :(
IN CONCLUSION...eh. Doom.wad and Doom2.wad both have a lot of flaws, but Doom.wad wins it because of Knee-Deep in the Dead. Nothing can compete with that ;p

Yeah, Plutonia is definitely my favorite, followed by doom1.wad. (shareware)

My favorite iwad is Doom, I always enjoy the atmosphere.

Doom, with Plutonia being a very close second. I love the gameplay, atmosphere and themes of both, but I enjoy Doom a bit more.
Doom 2 and Evilution are both rather bad, but Doom 2 has surprisingly good co-op and a larger amount of decent levels than Evilution, which is just horrible except for a few okay ones here and there.

doom2.wad is better overall for DM, doom.wad is better overall for Co-op and SP. Never played through E4, TNT or Plutonia, that's laziness for you.

Freedoom! Its free.
Plutonia for maps and gameplay. I like the maps where I need strategy to stay alive, instead of the usual shoot and take cover, or run like hell while shooting.

It's a toss-up between Doom and Heretic. I guess I'm a sucker for episodic formats. As for editing, though, Doom 2 is the best.

here are my favorite iwads, and why I like them:
Doom - weapons chainsaw (a friend of mine used to own a mcCulloch eager beaver years ago, which is the doom chainsaw, it was a slightly newer model however) and the shotgun.
Doom 2 - ssg, additional monsters, bigger levels, slightly more fun.
TNT - the music and some of the level design.
Plutonia - nothing really, its more or less coopable though.
FreeDoom - music rules, its free and open source.

I'd have to go with custom made for Multiplayer (more iWads = more potential = more fun) as of the SP, does one have to choose. I guess anything other than the lame attempts by amatures to develop SP iWads. Only a few Ammatures have ever made a good single player game that wasn't a racing, flight sim, solitare or puzzle game.

Those are .wads your thinking of not Iwads. Iwads come with certain officially released game.

PWADs to be precise. Any add-on wad is a pwad, and a standalone wad is an iwad.

I'll have to go with the original, doom2 for competitive play but plutonia gives the bigger challenge when it comes down to it.

I beat all the IWADs (Ultimate Doom, Doom II, TNT and Plutonia) in Ultra-Violence (which in Doom2's Competition terms (can be Wikipedied) makes me a "Doom Master"). Doom was fun, Doom 2 was long, TNT was interesting and It took me 2 hours to beat Plutonia level 8 starting with below 100% health.
My favorite IWADs would be Final Doom...
Plutonia has Cyberden and Go 2 it, which are kind of easy (except when playing tyson 100% kills and secrets!) and TNT has a ton of good maps and good music too.

hmmm.
I agree. av.wad is the best of classic wads.
But i also like Simplicity (sp_simp.wad) and claustrophobia (claust.wad). Both run on Zdoom.

(Ultimate) Doom wins for music and maps
Doom 2 wins for the music an maps it's horrible maps and music is patched with by everyone under the sun.

My favourites Iwads (not in order of preference) :
-Ultimate Doom
-Doom 2
-Plutonia
It's the better imo : differents styles of design and good possibilities for speedrun, gameplay opened and fun.
I dislike really TNT, he is deleted from my hard-drive : too crampy and linear I think.
Heretic is nice, but I wait a port who can enjoy me for to play it seriously (similar to PrBoom I hope).

I wait anxiously Kama Sutra 2 (Gusta and Method are two mappings gods I think =) and Plutonia 2 (where I'm a mapper).
