Title: MS-DOS!!
Post by: GhostlyDeath on December 07, 2006, 19:34:47
Would odamex be usable in Dos!? If it does then that would be cool so if Windows ever fails and I am forced to use dos I can still play!

Plus, those Soundblaster instruments sound awesome!

hah, the soundblaster did make midis sound the best :). But I doubt odamex will be compatible with DOS, it is simply made to emulate the physics of DOOM2.EXE it will not run natively or even at all on DOS. well, as far as I know at least....

DOS is garbage, if you end up depending on DOS you are screwed. :P

Odamex will not work on DOS because the operating system doesnt support threading, there is no SDL port, and it's ancient useless technology. :P

The very last version of ZDoom to support DOS was 1.17. last version of ZDoom to support DOS was 1.17.

I believe you mean 1.17, but yeah, everything that Alex said (regarding SDL and DOS) is true.

Who seriously uses DOS anymore? I don't see how launching DOS from a command-line only operating system is easier than from a GUI/command-line in any other operating system.

Why exactly would it be preferred?

Win16 is more feasible than dos imo

Actually, I would classify "Any platform that can compile under SDL" as feasable.  From the SDL website:

Quote
SDL supports Linux, Windows, Windows CE, BeOS, MacOS, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, BSD/OS, Solaris, IRIX, and QNX. The code contains support for AmigaOS, Dreamcast, Atari, AIX, OSF/Tru64, RISC OS, SymbianOS, and OS/2, but these are not officially supported.

Of those that have full support, we have not tested Odamex on Windows CE, BeOS, MacOS Classic, NetBSD, BSD/OS, IRIX and QNX.  And of course, I don't think anyone has tried any of the 'unsupported' platforms.

Besides not being officially supported, I don't think there is an ethernet adapter for Atari, Dreamcast or the Amiga systems, heh. I might be wrong about the Dreamcast though.

Dreamcast has a broadband adapter which many developers utilize to run their code on the system. However, last time I checked noone had written a decent driver for any of the DC modems

I have a dreamcast and TWO of those blasted ethernet adapters.  If anyone needs one let me know!  I'd like to try getting it to run on the dreamcast someday...

Isn't FreeDOS still in development? The only thing they really need to make it usable to a lot of people again is a unified sound system. Otherwise you are stuck using semi-old PC with support for the old ISA, or PCI, sound cards.

I once had a few moderns apps running in it thanks to the HX extender. You might give it a try. http://www.japheth.de/HX.html

Why did I bother? I was originally setting up a DOS machine to play some Doom.
