Technical Support / Patching Your Iwads

« on: March 07, 2013, 07:04:59 »
Note: If you have the original Steam releases of the Doom games you are up-to-date and do not need to bother reading this.

As you may or may not be aware, several versions of Doom were released between 1993 and 1995 due to bugs being found, and features being added. You can find all of the history for the releases here. The latest version of all of the iwads are final version "1.9"

If you need to check which version of any IWAD you have, you can use this utility by Russell:

There are patches released by id software that will update your installation of Doom and Doom 2 to the latest version, however you have to have the original full install which includes the exe, wad, and all corresponding files. Additionally they only run in DOS. But fear not, as patching utilities to simplify the process have been made over the years!

This iwad patcher will take any of your doom iwads and update them to the latest version, all you have to do is point it at what file you want to patch. Doom 3: BFG Edition users, you might want to go ahead and revert your iwads BACK to version 1.9 to uncensor the Wolfenstein levels. Note you do want certain final outcomes:
For Doom you want "Doom_19ud" AKA Ultimate Doom
For Doom 2 you want "Doom2_19" Final release before the BFG versions were released that censored stuff
For TNT you want "TNT_19" (but you already have this)
For Plutonia you want "Plutonia_19" (but you already have this)

Nitro Zone / Nitro #76 - SmartCTF

« on: January 30, 2013, 11:04:03 »

Oh look, CTF for smart people. Nah not really. Smart CTF is the brainchild of Chaindude and some of his friends to create maps that are a little more than run and gun. These maps feature multiple paths and you have to get a little creative if you want to successfully outsmart the opponent and bring your team to victory.

Nitro Zone / Nitro #71 - 8-bit CTF 1 Release Party

« on: December 28, 2012, 00:38:13 »

Oh ho ho what is this? The epic return of an old favorite?

Thats right folks. We're kicking it retro because I ripped apart the old classic, "8-bit CTF" for all to enjoy. Not only is it now compatible with Odamex via the CTF standard, but I also reworked the HUD sprites, flag sprites, and music to be cross port compatible. Be sure to wear your nostalgia hats and join us for the re-release of 8-bit CTF!

Nitro Zone / Nitro #69 - 32in24-11 FFA

« on: December 14, 2012, 22:03:40 »

We haven't done any 32in24 FFA in a while, so lets have a go at what is arguably one of the best ever released! 32in24-11 has an astonishing 45 maps stuffed into it, all of which are great except for the lame fist-only one that we are not including. Lets go!

Nitro Zone / Nitro #68 - 32in24-12 Manual CTF

« on: December 06, 2012, 00:10:25 »

It has been a while since we have done a manual CTF nitro, so lets put that into play! 32in24-12 has not seen very much love since its Odamex Nitro release party, and I find that a shame since there are some hidden gems in the wad. I picked through the maps and tried to find the ones people found most enjoyable during the release party and avoided the ones that were duds and frustrating. Enjoy!

WAD: 32in24-12

Nitro Zone / Nitro #67 - UDM1 Classic Deathmatch

« on: November 28, 2012, 20:47:51 »

UDM1 - the wad that started it all. This wad is the brainfart child of Ralphis, Deathz0r, and Liam from way back in 2001. Holy crap they're OLD! Anyway the maps are pretty good despite being the first maps they ever created, and the soundtrack is pretty awesome. UD ON TOP!

Nitro Zone / Nitro #63 - Anthology CTF

« on: October 31, 2012, 14:14:21 »

Anthology CTF is the original ZDCTFMP trilogy with so much more. The point of Anthology was to take the maps we've been playing for years and polish them of their glaring detail issues and bugs. Some maps were picked to be replaced with maps that were made for the original map pack, but cut for whatever reason despite being great maps. A few maps were even given added map structure, opening new paths for those past maps that were lacking for one reason or another. The end product is something I am very proud of and enjoy playing. I hope you do too.

Nitro Zone / Nitro #61 - UDM2 Deathmatch

« on: October 18, 2012, 09:59:25 »

UDM2. The legendary wad itself. UDM2 is the smallest UDM to be released so far, yet still manages to have more classics in it than the dwango series can shake a stick at. It's hard to believe it has been almost 10 years since this map set was released, they hold up so well! Join us this Saturday to re-experience this beloved favorite.

Nitro Zone / Nitro #57 - Bloodlands FFA

« on: September 21, 2012, 00:38:09 »

This wad has a special place in all of my blood pumping organs. Bloodlands is a vanilla 32-level replacement of Deathmatch levels created by TeamTNT, the same TeamTNT that created Final Doom. The wad has very few "new" textures because they wanted it to be small enough to fit on a floppy disk when zipped back in 1996 (har, it will take 3 seconds to download to your 2TB hard drive).

This was one of the first deathmatch mappacks I ever downloaded, before I even discovered source ports! Luckily for me it was a great one.

General Discussion / How Did You Find Odamex?

« on: September 13, 2012, 13:26:50 »
I remember AceOfSpades and Nautilus talking about it in a public Skulltag 96f Dwango5 Duel server back in 2006. When my friend asked "What is Odamex?" they shared the link to Back then the site was just "ODAMEX: Coming Soon..."

After that I managed to miss the 0.1a release but got 0.2a shortly after release. From then on I watched the port in IDE but hardly played it much until the 0.4 series, when I started hanging around the IRC channels and really started to take a like to the oldschool feel. I had forgotten what classic Doom felt like after playing Skulltag and ZDoom for so long, it was refreshing and nostalgic :)

How about you?

Nitro Zone / Nitro #55 - Odactf1 CTF

« on: September 05, 2012, 22:00:40 »

Probably the first map pack ever specifically created FOR Odamex, Odactf1 is an underrated map pack that features maps from highly skilled CTF mappers such as AlexMax, Ralphis, and Toke. Join us this Saturday as we dust off this classic in Nitro #55! Also while in the server be sure to bug AlexMax to get started on Odactf2

UPDATE: AlexMax has released a patch for map06 that he believes makes the map flow better. This patch is barely a few kilobytes, so it can easily be obtained from in-game downloading.

Devoblog / 32in24-12 Announced!

« on: August 12, 2012, 00:08:35 »
I don't know how many/if any of you keep up with DoomWorld, so I figured it might be worth mentioning here that Shaikoten has announced that 32in24-12 has started. The 32in24 Series is a collaboration of maps designed by mappers in a period of 24 hours, then refined over a few days. Its a fun community event that lots of Doomers like to take part in. I mention this because Odamex happens to be involved! 32in24-11 was previously a double feature for Odamex Nitro, first to test the maps one Saturday then play the finished product the next. It was pretty sweet! We are doing the same this upcoming week to celebrate a year since the launch of Odamex Nitro.

32in24-12 will be CTF this time around, the maps being in Boom format. If you would like to get involved, be sure to check out the official DoomWorld thread regarding the subject.
