Classic CTF
« on: November 09, 2006, 17:28:11 »
A topic for each project, I suppose...

Tonight I finished Beta 2 of Classic CTF. What is Classic CTF? Well, it is...

Code: [Select]
MAP01: Fortress Collision (ZDCTFMP MAP01)
MAP02: Refineries (ZDCTFMP MAP02)
MAP03: Exophase (ZDCTFMP MAP03, got permission from Exl)
MAP04: Cursed (ZDCTFMP MAP06)
MAP05: The Excavation (ZDCTFMP MAP07)
MAP06: Something Epic (ZDCTFMP MAP08)
MAP07: Frozen (ZDCTFMP MAP09)
MAP08: UAC Headquarters (ZDCTFMP2 MAP19, got permission from Seismos)

...all converted to Boom. And they're all done and converted too, so you can try them out now. All I need is to come up with a logo for the title screen, and also address bugs that come up durring testing. Once that's settled, then Odamex (and also Skulltag (!)) will be able to, for the first time, play maps that were formally locked into ZDaemon.

Get it here.

ZDCTFMP and ZDCTFMP2 are projects I organized.  Some of the maps I listed are mine.  Others are by authors who left the community long ago, leaving their maps in my hands.  Since the objective is not to 'update' but to 'standardize' the maps to reach a wider audience, I don't feel guilty about not being able to reach them.  These maps deserve better than to be lost to an obsolete CTF Standard.

Make a report on the bug tracker, assuming one hasn't been made yet.

The bug tracker is for Odamex, not pwads made for it.

I ported all the ZDaemon CTF maps to Skulltag but never released it, it was all the same maps but with Team Starts and The Standard CTF stuff.

I think ZDaemon used CTFDoom as kind of a base... Can you play CTFDoom maps in ZDaemon nativly?

I dont think so.  I remember being around when CTF was being coded, and there was no mention of CTFDoom.  There was a coder named duke4ever who did the majority of the CTF code, then Kilgore cleaned it up, and from following their development (I remember making a test CTF map based on E1M1 back when there were no such things as team starts) ,it didn't look like their code was based on anything.

Would it not be smart enough to name them "ODCTF01 - ODCTF10" like that standing for "ODAMEX CTF MAP01"? I would recommend telling it to be in a addition like skulltag does.

Why?  First of all, other than Skulltag and maybe the odd ZDoom map, pretty much every levelset follows the MAPxx standard.  Secondly, Odamex can stream-load WAD's on the fly, so having two WAD's with identical map names is not an issue (and makes the 'kludge' I did for ZDaemon CTF 1+2 obsolete).

This is some good work, reminds me of some of the CTF maps that were fun to play on a particular engine however got sick of the community.

I haven't worked on this in forever.  Can someone who has massive amounts of ZDCTFMP experience help test this mapset so I can consider it finished or unfinished?  Keep in mind that I havent really paid attention to pro strategies on this map since a few months after creation, so if you can tell me some inconsistencies that I could possibly fix PLEASE do so.
